About the program
Program provided by the VERN' University 

EU EXECUTIVE PROGRAM

Knowing business and social context of the European Union becomes an increasingly more important competence in the private and public sector of the Republic of Croatia, where experts with multidisciplinary education, with communications and managerial skills and specific knowledge about decision making, lobbying and representing various interests in the EU increasingly gain importance. 

Why attend the EU EXECUTIVE program:

  • program is an answer to numerous practical issues of the „European“ theme
  • program represents a combination of theory and practice through case studies, exercises and participation in simulation games
  • a multidisciplinary combination of modules links practical examples from the politics, economy, international and commercial law, as well as practical skills of negotiating, lobbying and networking,
  • program responds to the needs of middle and higher management, as well as the employed experts in the public and non-governmental sector,
  • program is also intended for students who intend to develop their careers on the positions of international business and international relations,

EU Executive program provides answers to practical questions, such as:

  • how to apply and use the means from the EU funds 
  • functioning of the European institutions
  • getting around in the decision-making channels 
  • adjustment to regulations and legal practice of the EU
  • successful lobbying in the European market

Competencies after the completion of the program:

  • knowing the European institutions and processes, legal practice and the possibilities and limitations of participating in the European market
  • understanding the 'EU maze' and practical aspects of Croatia's membership in the EU 
  • knowing the rules of EU project management and preparedness for financial and operative project management funded by the European Union 
  • coping with lobbying techniques, negotiating and advocating for interests and strengthening the private and business networks, as well as personal communication and negotiating skills.

The classes:
The lectures will be held in Croatian and English, and all attendants will, upon completing the program, get VERN's certificates proving their attendance of the EU Executive program.  After the confirmation of participation in the EU Executive program, the attendants will get a detailed program and materials required for their attendance.

Description of the module

MODULE 1: INTRODUCTION TO INSTITUIONS, POLITICS AND ECONOMIC INTEGRATION IN THE EU

The attendants will familiarize themselves with the chosen aspects of institutions and common policies of the European Union and fundamental principles that Croatia is taking over.

They will also learn about the changes that may be expected in certain economic areas and the situation that the Croatian companies will face on the common European market. Through relevant case studies, the attendants will get insight into examples from the practice of the European market which illustrates all competencies of individual institutions, influence on policies and ways of dispute settlement.

MODULE 2: NEGOTIATIONS AND LOBBYING IN THE EU

The attendants will learn the basic techniques of negotiation, advocating and lobbying and become skilled in the understanding lobbyist practice from the perspective of business management and projecting successful planning and implementation of negotiation and lobbying. The module will also deal with the specifics of negotiation of entities such as industrial networks, business and non-governmental associations with European institutions, but also within them. By applying methods of simulation and case study, the attendants will learn how to prepare cases for lobbying and familiarize themselves with campaign as a systematic procedure. The mentioned methods will ensure them practical insight on the topics of lobbying and negotiation, as well as direct application of knowledge in everyday business in a way presented by professor Tony Bass.

MODULE 3:
A COMPANY IN THE EU CONTEXT: MANAGING AND FINANCING FROM INNOVATIVE PROJECTS FUDNDED BY THE EU

First part of the module

Since the projects financed by the European pre-accession funds are a result of well-designed ideas, the attendants will familiarize themselves with the models of their design and financing. They will also become acquainted with the ways of using funds, procedures of evaluation and specific rules and procedures of choosing projects for financing, as well as successful implementation and financial management of the projects. Through case studies from the actual business practice in Croatia, the attendants will learn about the rules, but also the typical mistakes that happen when applying for allocation of means from the EU funds.


Second part of the module

Through group work, application and presentation of the learned content in composing projects, the attendants will familiarize themselves with the ways of measuring success of the projects financed by the EU funds.  They will become skilled in designing project logics, making the project budget and try themselves as project evaluators. The second part of the module emphasizes the innovation of the company in the EU environment, preparation of the company for implementing a project financed from one of the Structural Funds, case studies and success formula in the Slovenian example. The peak of the module is the exercise of the critical and creative deliberation on project ideas.

MODULE 4: LAW AND LEGAL PRACTICE IN THE EU MARKET 

The attendants will gain knowledge about the fundamentals of European law through practice and case studies from the European market. Special emphasis will be placed on economic integration, free movement of goods and legal aspects of establishing a company in the EU (freedom of business establishment). In addition, they will learn to differentiate between the legal instruments that will be useful to them for following the areas that they are working or doing business in.
